How safe is your sunscreen?

“Bring on summer” they said. “I need some of that Vitamin D’” they said.

We are all aware of the epic and potentially damaging UV rays the sun brings during the heat of summer. I am sure at some point in our lives, we have all fallen victim to sun-kissed, I mean, sun-BURNT skin after a few too many hours in the surf or on the beach. So I ask you, HOW are you going to protect yours and your families skin this summer?

Recently, reports from the Environmental Working Group (EWG) are warning people against the use of conventional sunscreens.

But why?

A lot of conventional sunscreens contain chemicals which once absorbed into the skin can cross into other tissues of the body and potentially become harmful. The UV-filter, Oxybenzone (found in most chemical sunscreens), has undoubtedly shown to readily absorb into the skin and disrupt the bodies endocrine system. It interferes with hormonal processes creating hormone imbalances where it then fools the bodies organ systems and other important bodily functions.

The absorption of such chemicals found in sunscreens has become a focused issue for both men and women, specifically in pregnant/breastfeeding women and children. The EWG strongly warns against the use of such sunscreens due to the toxicity in pregnant women and children due to skin absorption, hormonal disturbances, skin irritations and even cellular damage. So what are the alternatives for the upcoming summer sun?

Chemical free sunscreens are becoming readily available satisfying our health and skincare. One product, ’SurfMud’, is a natural Zinc cream that is renown to protect the skin from not only the epic UV rays but from the strong ocean winds. Designed by surfers themselves, SurfMud contains added ingredients such as bees wax, natural lanolin and certified natural coconut oil to help create a protective barrier between the skin and external environment.

Another product 'Little Urchin Sunscreen' is a unique formula that provides UVA and UVB broad spectrum protection from the sun while also being 3-hours water resistant to provide protection while swimming, playing sports or simply spending time in the sun. It is made with no nasties, is preservative free and is suitable for the whole family (6 months and older) as a body and face sunscreen. Free of any dangerous chemicals, it does not contain any UV absorbers, titanium dioxide, parabens, synthetic preservatives or synthetic fragrances.

Start your summer right and keep your skin tight.
